Entry requirements
In order to enrol in He Korowai Ākonga (Primary), applicants must:
1. be 18 years or older at enrolment, and
2. have a demonstrated personal suitability with an interest or involvement in teaching and learning;
3. If under 20 years of age, applicants must have the required NCEA credits for university entrance.
4. If over 20 years of age applicants must have:
a. Successfully completed a level 4 certificate of at least 120 credits and
b. Met the competencies required in literacy and numeracy; and
c. Have successfully attained a score of 7 or higher in each component of the academic version of IELTS if English is an additional language.
5. complete an application package; and
6. provide supportive references from two appropriate people within the community and the field of education; and
7. must provide evidence of their ability to successfully pursue and complete a bachelors degree12; and
8. participate in an interview process to demonstrate suitability to the programme; and
9. prior to gaining entry into the programme, ākonga will be required to:-
* complete and submit the Criminal Convictions Disclaimer form;
* complete and submit the Police Vetting Information form - Authorisation to Disclose Information, which allows police vetting to occur.

The Bachelor of Education (He Korowai Ākonga - primary) degree is designed to produce transformative educational leaders with specialist knowledge, skills and attributes in the field of primary education. He Korowai Ākonga (Bachelor of Education) is underpinned by Māori philosophies, Māori principles and Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge). It is further distinguished from other teacher education degrees in New Zealand because of its holistic orientation and strong emphasis on principled practice and praxis. This qualification focuses on curriculum integration and graduates of this qualification will have developed specialised knowledge of multiple literacies. He Korowai Ākonga (primary) is also delivered in a supportive whānau learning environment at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
