About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the equine industry with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to assist in the stabling, care, and/or exercise of horses in the performance horse sectors of the equine industry.

The qualification is stranded to reflect the specialist skills required to work either in the harness industry, thoroughbred racing industry or the sporthorse industry.

Graduates will be able to contribute effectively in the workplace at entry-level with limited supervision.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Entry is open to applicants aged 16 years or older. The student must have an interest in the equine industry and physical capability to cope with the practical demands of the qualification. The applicants will be invited to an interview to help us ensure the course is right for them. The following industry rules apply: * New Zealand Rules of Racing of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Inc. * Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz. Face to Face Learning entry requirements: * Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident; * Hold a NZ Certificate of Equine Skills Level 2; * OR have a basic riding experiencing and be accessed by Byerley Park staff and have a keen interest in equine industry and successfully attend an interview. Face to Face Learning entry requirements for International Students: * Hold a valid visa to study; * Hold a NZ Certificate of Equine Skills Level 2; * OR have a basic riding experiencing and be accessed by Byerley Park staff and have a keen interest in equine industry and successfully attend an interview; * Have an NZCEL Level 3 General, Workplace or Academic, or IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5. Blended and Online Learning entry requirements: * Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident; * Hold a NZ Certificate of Equine Skills Level 2; * OR have a basic riding experiencing and be accessed by Byerley Park staff and have a keen interest in equine industry and successfully attend an interview; * Be employed in the equine industry or able to gain employment in the sector before enrolment start date or agree to undertake a volunteer work placement organised by Skill New Zealand; * Have basic computing skills, access to a device and the internet.
