About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

This qualification is intended for whānau, hapū and others who work in the area of resource management, specifically in the protection and management of wāhi tapu, wāhi tūpuna, heritage and sites of significance; and are seeking a formal qualification to work independently at an intermediate level.
The purpose of the qualification is to provide whānau, hapū, iwi, hapori and other entities with graduates who are capable to fulfil kaupapa Māori based advocacy roles and activities at an intermediate level. Te iwi Māori and Aotearoa will benefit from having graduates who are able to provide, from a te ao Māori perspective, the skills and knowledge to protect and manage Māori heritage and sites of significance to Māori (cultural, physical and spiritual) for the benefit of current and future generations.
Graduates of this qualification will have an understanding of a system and framework to use in protecting Māori heritage and sites of significance, and will be able to use their skills and knowledge based on whanaungatanga, kaitiakitanga, te pono me te tika, tūrangawaewae, pūkengatanga and rangatiratanga to independently apply the processes available for their protection and management.

Minimum requirements

Applicants will have a keen interest in kaitiakitanga o nga taonga tuku iho, wahi tapu, Taranaki Reo and Taranaki Tikanga as evidenced by interview and/or in consultation with relevant iwi/hapu or organisation(s). Selection of students will be based on five criteria as discussed at an interview. Taranaki Whakapapa - ability to demonstate whakapapa links to, or association with any of the iwi/hapu between Mokau to the north and Taipake in the shouth. Also included are descendants of Taranaki based iwi associated with the areas of Waikanae, Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara, Whakatu, Waikawa and Wharekauri. Reo Proficiency - keen interest in Taranaki Reo and Taranaki Tikanga and a willingness to participate in a bilingual environment. Community involvement - people who are actively involved in community based and/or iwi projects/services will be given priority. Emphasis will be placed on the person's potential to utilise the content from this programme directly in his or her community-based projects. Ability to attend - the programme will be best served by regular attendance which promotes the continuity of content and delivery; and Skill or Experience - a person's capacity to contribute to the overarching project of the revitalisation of Taranaki reo me ona tikanga
